Cora Tilling arrives at Ascot Racecourse on Ladies Day for her first visit to her uncle Adrian Tilling, the Laird of Mant Manor. The wealthy Scottish lord brings his hot favorite to the start of the Gold Cup: “Satan” is the name of the unruly wonder horse, which – if you believe the rumors of the bookmakers – is ridden by the devil himself. And Satan soon lives up to his name: during training he throws his jockey off and he dies. Was it really just an accident?

But that’s not all: when a murder also takes place, Cora finds herself in mortal danger and unexpectedly becomes the prime suspect.
